Revelstoke Fabrication Lab Brings Big Ideas to Life – Revelstoke Review
A local non-profit organization creates a space where individuals and businesses can bring their big ideas to life, from concept to final product.
The Revelstoke Manufacturing Lab has opened its new space in the Revelstoke Innovation Center, above the Visitor Information Center, so the community has access to the latest digital design and manufacturing technologies.
The Fab Lab’s equipment, comprising three state-of-the-art 3D printers, two UV lamps for curing the creations made in the printers and a laser cutter used to cut 2D and 3D objects with incredible precision. The lab’s equipment is valued at around $ 100,000, according to Hayley Johnson of the Fab Lab.
Johnson, alongside the rest of the Fab Lab team, not only creates a space for project creation, but a space to learn more about the next generation technology that people in a community this size would generally not have access.
In the past, local businesses had to outsource projects to Trail or Calgary, the closest locations with a similar sized lab, industrial grade printer, and the same level of machinery.
Another goal for the lab staff is to provide programs for children in the area to better educate them on the software that will be used in the future and help them become technologically savvy and catch up with their docks in the city. who already have access to similar software. Technology.
A recent camp run by the Fab Lab saw children building robots, then printing weapons for the robots into the machines on site, then battling the robots with their classmates. The camp taught the theory of creating 3D objects and also engaged the students with something that they are interested in and could engage them with.
“We’re looking at kids who are new to technology and have never touched it before going in and learning, and then are able to create stuff independently,” said Dylan Hardy, board member of the Fab Lab.
Becoming a member of the Fab Lab provides access to programs, equipment, and the ability to master industry standard technology by working alongside on-site technical experts. Memberships are processed monthly.
Those who become proficient have the opportunity to become instructors themselves.
