The $51 million project to extend the Jimmy DeLoach Parkway to I-16 is complete, an initiative to ease truck congestion along the freeway en route to the Port Authority’s Garden City Terminal in Georgia.

Phase II of the parkway began construction in 2017, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation, which managed the project. The work included several improvements to the existing roadways as well as the construction of a 3-mile stretch of completely new roadway. The new road extends the parkway where it ends at US 80 before joining Bloomingdale’s Road, which was widened for the project.

  • New 2.73 mile road that connects I-16 at the end of the existing parkway to US 80.
  • Widening of Main Street (US 80) in Bloomingdale’s from two to four lanes, with the installation of a 44-foot grass median.
  • The Little Ogeechee River Bridge was widened, with a second span added for new lanes.
  • Two-lane bridge over a CSX level crossing.

The project was originally scheduled to be completed in October 2021.

After the expansion is complete, the Jimmy DeLoach Parkway provides a bypass route between the freeway and GPA headquarters that bypasses Georgia 21 and other congested freeways.

Crews were working Thursday to complete the finishing touches before opening the Jimmy DeLoach Parkway extension in Bloomingdale's.

The expansion is part of a regional effort to move port traffic away from commuter lanes in West Chatham County.
