Is the Audi S3 2022 better than the Golf R or is it a Lovechild A3 and RS 3?

Despite all the fuss around SUVs, the new Audi S3 2022 still offers a place in a segment that is slowly being shut out of the market – the luxury compact sedan segment. It is a bloated version of the new Audi A3 sedan and rivals the BMW M235i Gran Coupé, Cadillac CT4-V and Mercedes-AMG A 35 Sedan. Jakub and Yuri of TheStraightPipes drove the new Audi S3 2022 to find out if the compact luxury sedan segment is worth it.
Forget about its meager proportions. The 2022 S3 has the building blocks of a track car. Styled and optimized with the A4 and A6 in mind, it borrows heavily from its equally cool sibling A3 Sedan. You also get more grippy sport seats, a chunkier body, and an all-new, wide and crazy grille. Yuri feels like it looks like a baby Audi RS e-Tron GT from the side.

The most notable aspect of the Audi S3 2022 is its powertrain. All S3 are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission, developing 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Like the previous generation of the S3, the 2022 model can go from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The S3 is lower, runs on an all-wheel drive system and has a tuned suspension.

The new S3 comes with the same engine as the Golf R and GTI but is tuned differently. From Jakub and Yuri’s driving experience, it’s pretty quick and quite similar to the Golf R. Even though there is a bit of understeer on the S3, the duo feel the Quattro and Golf. 4 movement are pretty much the same.

The S3 has exemplary handling. Although it comes with adaptive suspension like the RS 5, it is not as stiff but smoother in all driving modes. Behind the wheel, you’ll immediately feel the powertrain’s eagerness to deliver.
