Dishwasher Dimensions: How to Measure for the Perfect Fit
If you’re looking for a new dishwasher, there are a lot of things to consider. From special wash cycles, adjustable racks, floor sensors, noise levels and cycle times, your head may already be spinning comparing the different options. However, there is an additional element that should not be overlooked when shopping: the dimensions of the dishwasher.
Dishwashers come in different sizes, so it’s crucial to know which type is best for a space and how to get the right dishwasher measurements before you shop.

Standard Dishwasher Sizes
It would be easy to assume that all dishwashers are the same size, but many do not share the same dimensions. While there is a standard dishwasher size for built-in models, there are also oversized dishwashers, portable dishwashers, compact dishwashers, and countertop dishwashers.
Knowing the type of appliance you need and checking the measurements of your available space will save you from having to return a dishwasher that won’t fit in your kitchen. Below is a list of some standard dishwasher sizes for different types of dishwashers. Keep in mind that not all dishwashers in each category will have standard dimensions, but these numbers give a good idea of what to expect.
- Built-in dishwasher: 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 35 inches high
- Oversized dishwasher: 30 to 42 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 35 inches high
- Compact dishwasher: 18 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 35 inches high
- Countertop dishwasher: 22 inches wide by 20 inches deep by 17 inches high
- Portable dishwasher: Dimensions vary from 18 inches wide by 26 inches deep by 36 inches high; at 24 inches wide by 30 inches deep by 37 inches high (depends on the specific model and whether it is a countertop dishwasher or a standing dishwasher.)
How to Measure a Dishwasher Rough Opening
Because there is no single answer to the question “how wide is a dishwasher”, it is important to measure the opening where your dishwasher will fit before buying a new model. The steps outlined below will help you take accurate measurements of the rough opening. This will give you the width, length and height of the dishwasher that will fit under your counters or in your kitchen island.
When measuring the space for your ideal dishwasher size, write down each measurement on a notepad (or in your smartphone) so you don’t forget them.

STEP 1: Measure to find the width of the dishwasher.
Measuring from left to right, use a tape measure to find the width of the interior opening, usually between two cabinets. Take at least two measurements. Determine both the width at the top of the opening and the bottom of the opening, so that you are aware of any major differences between the two. If the widths do not match, double check by measuring several times. If the opening widens up or down, choose the smaller measurement.
If you are installing your dishwasher next to a wall or on the side of another cabinet, allow at least 2 inches of extra space. After measuring the width of the opening, write down the measurement on a notepad.

STEP 2: Measure to find the depth of the dishwasher.
Reach the back wall of the cabinet with your tape measure to find the depth of the cabinets (from the back wall to the front of the cabinet). Repeat this step on the opposite side of the cabinet to double-check your measurements. Record the depth measurement in your notepad.
When measuring the depth, keep in mind that the dishwasher door will need space to fully open. Depending on the dishwasher you choose, most manufacturers recommend having at least 21 to 27 inches of space between the dishwasher and the cabinet or wall in front of it.
STEP 3: Measure to find the height of the dishwasher.
To find the height of the dishwasher space, take three different measurements from the left, middle, and right side of the opening. Taking just one measurement can be misleading if your kitchen floors aren’t completely level.
Begin by placing the end of the tape measure on the floor on the left side of the opening. Extend the measuring tape to the bottom of the counter and record this measurement in your notebook. Repeat these steps to measure the height of the middle and right side of the opening. If there is a slight variation between heights, don’t worry too much. Many dishwashers have adjustable feet to help keep it level with the counter.
Although 24 inches is the standard width for a dishwasher, it is still important to measure the space in your kitchen before buying a new appliance. Dishwasher sizes can vary, and careful measurements will ensure that the new one you choose fits perfectly into your cabinet opening.
